The built environment sector (supply, design, construction, manage), despite decades (of reports, training, strategies, legislation) is simply not making real progress within the sustainability agenda and the imperative of resilience. Business-as-usual, only reducing impact, remains the dominant, degenerative discourse.
One of the areas where we at Living Future Europe believe faster and more effective progress is needed is education and communication. On one hand, we need to train new generations of practitioners to make living buildings real. On the other hand, we need to communicate constantly in an invigorating way that regenerative buildings, products, companies, and communities are vital, technically feasible, ecologically robust, and economically viable.
To achieve these goals, we have established the ‘Living Future Europe Masterclass’, the third edition of the online educational program running between February and May 2024. The upcoming Masterclass, much like in previous years, will focus on education as a powerful tool in affecting progress towards regenerative design. This year we would like to pushing the boundaries even further. Our goal with this edition is to build on the past edition’s success, and address the ‘why’, the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of living buildings, products, and communities.

POSITIVE PRODUCTS [17:00-18:00 UTC +2]with Carlo Battisti
Declare is a platform to share and find healthy building products. Manufacturers voluntarily disclose product information on easy-to-read Declare labels, which are accessible on a free database used by leading designers, real estate owners, and conscientious homeowners to specify products they know they can trust. By facilitating and simplifying the exchange of complex ingredient information, Declare has positively changed the materials marketplace to enable the creation of buildings that support human and environmental health. Learn from a leading manufacturer in Europe how Declare impacted their sustainability strategies and industrial processes, guiding the transformation towards a healthier and carbon neutral industry scenario.
SCALE JUMPING [18:00-19:00 UTC+2]with Dimitra Theocari
Depending on the technology, the optimal scale can vary when considering environmental impact, first cost and operating costs. To address these realities, the Living Building Challenge has a Scale Jumping overlay to allow multiple buildings or projects to operate in a cooperative state—sharing green infrastructure as appropriate and allowing for environmental and social benefits to be achieved as elegantly and efficiently as possible. But in our case, scale jumping has an additional meaning, i.e. how to scale up at district or city level, the regenerative design strategies applicable at a building scale.
