LFE 2024 Masterclass. Regenerative + Agile
24 April 2024 17:00-19:00 CEST (UTC+2)
The ‘Living Future Europe Masterclass’ is an online educational program running between February and May 2024, where we want to address the ‘why’, the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of living buildings, products, and communities.
Organization: Living Future Europe.
Thank you to all who attended this LFE24MC session. The recording is now available for additional registrants on demand. Please register for the event below to gain access to the recordings. If you have already registered, please input your Access Code here to gain access.

The LFE 2024 Masterclass training modules are available individually on demand. Enjoy this opportunity! Recording will be also available afterwards in case you are not able to attend them live.
The built environment sector (supply, design, construction, manage), despite decades (of reports, training, strategies, legislation) is simply not making real progress within the sustainability agenda and the imperative of resilience. Business-as-usual, only reducing impact, remains the dominant, degenerative discourse.
One of the areas where we at Living Future Europe believe faster and more effective progress is needed is education and communication. On one hand, we need to train new generations of practitioners to make living buildings real. On the other hand, we need to communicate constantly in an invigorating way that regenerative buildings, products, companies, and communities are vital, technically feasible, ecologically robust, and economically viable.
To achieve these goals, we have established the ‘Living Future Europe Masterclass’, the third edition of the online educational program running between February and May 2024. The upcoming Masterclass, much like in previous years, will focus on education as a powerful tool in affecting progress towards regenerative design. This year we would like to pushing the boundaries even further. Our goal with this edition is to build on the past edition’s success, and address the ‘why’, the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of living buildings, products, and communities.

This session will feature:
LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE PROJECT MANAGEMENT [17:00-18:00 UTC +2]with Emmanuel Pauwels
When working with a program like the Living Building Challenge, a different mindset or mental model is required as explored during our previous session. The process of designing a Living Building requires project teams to integrate the different requirements into a whole system and to do this in an effective and efficient way, an integrative design process is required. This process is structured in such a way that it creates opportunities for the design team to link the many parts of social, technical, and natural systems into a coherent and mutually supportive whole system. During this session we will explore the key elements of an integrative process so that we become aware of the importance of this process to deliver Living Buildings in an efficient and effective way.
EU / UK REGULATIONS [18:00-19:00 UTC+2]with Emmanuelle Maire & Martin Brown
Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to Europe and the world. To overcome these challenges, the European Union set up a system of new policies, regulations, plans, such as the European Green Deal, that will transform the EU into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, ensuring: no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, economic growth decoupled from resource use, no person and no place left behind. This goes along with other initiatives, such as the EU Taxonomy, i.e. a classification system, establishing a list of environmentally sustainable economic activities, playing an important role helping the EU scale up sustainable investment and implement the European Green Deal.
Moderator: Martin Brown
Emmanuel Pauwels’ home in the Spanish pyrenees is a Living Building Challenge certified building. His experience with the LBC has led him to transitioning from sustainability to regeneration. He is the founder of Green Living Projects, a consultancy firm with a specific focus on integrative process facilitation and he recently founded A Regenerative Place, a not for profit that brings together real estate professionals transitioning towards regenerative practice by sharing inspiration, experiences and challenges so we can master a different approach to the development of our human habitats and unlock new opportunities for ourselves and our organisations as active participants in the regenerative transformation of our industry.
Emmanuelle Maire works at the European Commission in Brussels, in the Directorate general for Environment (DG ENV). She heads the team responsible for Circular economy, Sustainable Production and Consumption. The core activity of the team is to support the transition to a circular and green economy in the European Union.
Drawing on a life of outdoor exploration, a career in the built environment and a passion for a regenerative future, as a sustainability provocateur, Martin supports, counsels, nurtures and prompts clients, designers, contractors, academic & industry groups on regenerative journeys and discoveries.
From a blend of imperatives, Martin presents a core argument that sustainability as we approach it today, in simply lessening our impacts, will fall far short in arresting the climate, ecological and health emergencies we currently find ourselves in.
