LFE 2024 Masterclass. Regenerative + Agile
27 March 2024 17:00-19:00 CET (UTC+1)
The ‘Living Future Europe Masterclass’ is an online educational program running between February and May 2024, where we want to address the ‘why’, the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of living buildings, products, and communities.
Organization: Living Future Europe.
Thank you to all who attended this LFE24MC session. The recording is now available for additional registrants on demand. Please register for the event below to gain access to the recordings. If you have already registered, please input your Access Code here to gain access.

The LFE 2024 Masterclass training modules are available individually on demand. Enjoy this opportunity! Recording will be also available afterwards in case you are not able to attend them live.
The built environment sector (supply, design, construction, manage), despite decades (of reports, training, strategies, legislation) is simply not making real progress within the sustainability agenda and the imperative of resilience. Business-as-usual, only reducing impact, remains the dominant, degenerative discourse.
One of the areas where we at Living Future Europe believe faster and more effective progress is needed is education and communication. On one hand, we need to train new generations of practitioners to make living buildings real. On the other hand, we need to communicate constantly in an invigorating way that regenerative buildings, products, companies, and communities are vital, technically feasible, ecologically robust, and economically viable.
To achieve these goals, we have established the ‘Living Future Europe Masterclass’, the third edition of the online educational program running between February and May 2024. The upcoming Masterclass, much like in previous years, will focus on education as a powerful tool in affecting progress towards regenerative design. This year we would like to pushing the boundaries even further. Our goal with this edition is to build on the past edition’s success, and address the ‘why’, the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of living buildings, products, and communities.

LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE FINANCIAL CASE [17:00-18:00 UTC +1]with Richard Piacentini
Among the bottlenecks that prevent a rapid implementation of regenerative design approach on a large scale, finance is all too often an avoided and neglected aspect that needs to be explored more. Living buildings have demonstrated in many cases that they make sense from a financial perspective, providing a return on the investment (ROI) that justifies the initial financial effort.
A careful analysis of the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ finances demonstrates that for many developers and owners a compelling case can be made today that very high-performance, deep green buildings can pass financial tests, while also delivering a valuable stream of mission-oriented ‘external’ public benefits.
ZERO CARBON [18:00-19:00 UTC+1]with Alexandros Galatoulas & Phanos Hadjikyriakou
The International Living Future Institute Zero Carbon certification envisions a future of carbon positive buildings + materials that reverse the effects of climate change and support thriving local economics. Learn more about the only performance-based carbon standard that addresses both operational and embodied carbon from a Europe based experienced consulting firm who applied ZC on an exemplary project.
Moderator: Martin Brown
Piacentini has guided Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens from public to private management and led the green transformation of its facilities and operations, including: the first LEED® certified visitor’s center in a public garden and the Center for Sustainable Landscapes, the first and only building in the world to meet: the Living Building, LEED® Platinum, WELL™ Building Platinum, and 4 Stars Sustainable SITES™ certifications. Piacentini is interested in the intersection between the built and natural environments, particularly as it relates to human and environmental wellness and speaks on the subject. He serves as past Chair and Secretary of the board of the International Living Future Institute.
Alexandros Galatoulasd is an engineer and construction project manager which specialises in sustainable/regenerative buildings designs inspired by International Living Future programmes. He is currently the co-founder of XYZ Management Consulting, a technical
advisory firm that is focusing on the implementation of sustainable and low carbon projects in Greece. He is a strong advocate for creating a ZERO CARBON community in Greece by bridging gaps between consultants, product manufacturers, suppliers and developers
through a voluntary initiative of "Zero carbon Hellas" that promotes the implementation of extremely low carbon projects in Greece. Alex is an accredited professional with LFA, Passive House and Technical Chamber of Greece
Phanos Hadjikyriakou is an engineer-turned-entrepreneur with extensive experience in ESG, as well as in using data to build and adjust climate strategies in the built environment. He is currently the co-founder and CEO of 2050 Materials, a company making significant contributions to the integration of sustainability data within digital technologies in the AEC
sector. He is a strong advocate of API-first approaches in software, as well as of the integration of sustainability data directly into existing tools and workflows, to empower
professionals with real-time, impact-based decision-making capabilities. Previously, Phanos led a team of researchers building climate risk metrics in the financial sector, used by institutional real estate investors.
Drawing on a life of outdoor exploration, a career in the built environment and a passion for a regenerative future, as a sustainability provocateur, Martin supports, counsels, nurtures and prompts clients, designers, contractors, academic & industry groups on regenerative journeys and discoveries.
From a blend of imperatives, Martin presents a core argument that sustainability as we approach it today, in simply lessening our impacts, will fall far short in arresting the climate, ecological and health emergencies we currently find ourselves in.
Martin was recognised as a LF Hero (2018).
