The built environment sector (supply, design, construction, manage), despite decades (of reports, training, strategies, legislation) is simply not making real progress within the sustainability agenda and the imperative of resilience. Business-as-usual, only reducing impact, remains the dominant, degenerative discourse.
One of the areas where we at Living Future Europe believe faster and more effective progress is needed is education and communication. On one hand, we need to train new generations of practitioners to make living buildings real. On the other hand, we need to communicate constantly in an invigorating way that regenerative buildings, products, companies, and communities are vital, technically feasible, ecologically robust, and economically viable.
To achieve these goals, we have established the ‘Living Future Europe Masterclass’, the third edition of the online educational program running between February and May 2024. The upcoming Masterclass, much like in previous years, will focus on education as a powerful tool in affecting progress towards regenerative design. This year we would like to pushing the boundaries even further. Our goal with this edition is to build on the past edition’s success, and address the ‘why’, the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of living buildings, products, and communities.

DESIGN FOR CLIMATE RESILIENCE [17:00-18:00 UTC +1]with Michael Bruse
Increasing and global awareness of climate change and its negative impacts places increased pressure on architects, planners and all in the built environment to integrate climate considerations into the design process. This calls for robust designs that provide habitation under increasingly extreme conditions and designs that can do so without exacerbating the climate crisis through their production and operation. The module discusses practical design solutions that the program, form, and materials that cities and buildings should take to reverse climate change dynamics, globally and locally.
THINKING THE NEB WAY[18:00-19:00 UTC+1]with Loredana Stasisin
The New European Bauhaus [NEB] was launched in September 2020, by the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, as a core part of the Green Deal. The movement, that finds its origin in the original Bauhaus approach, from the ‘30s, it’s a work in progress framework, bridging different backgrounds, cutting across disciplines and building on participation at all levels. Aiming to facilitate and steer the transformation of our societies, NEB is articulated through a set of three inseparable values [beauty, sustainability, togetherness] and three working principles [participatory process, multi- level engagement, transdisciplinary approach].
