Andy is an ILFI accredited architect with a passion for regenerative design. I enjoy working across a variety of scales and sectors - in particular culture, workplace and transport. His design approach is inspired by nature to find elegant, efficient solutions in response to complex requirements. I enjoy working in a collaborative way to deliver the best design outcomes.
BIOPHILIC DESIGN - EVOLVED RELATIONSHIPS
Matthew VanSweden is a regenerative strategist, systems thinker, and narrative designer who leads sustainability and cultural design initiatives at Progressive Companies. A long-time contributor to the AIA Framework for Design Excellence, his work centers on architecture as moral memory—treating buildings not as neutral containers, but as systems that metabolize trauma, trust, and identity. Matthew’s practice spans civic, educational, and cultural typologies, with a focus on narrative infrastructure, ecological empathy, and justice-informed design logic. He develops tools that treat story not as message, but as consequence architecture—and helps institutions carry values through the friction of real implementation. A frequent speaker and narrative coach, Matthew is shaping the next evolution of biophilic practice: where sensory delight meets system repair, and where buildings learn to listen.
After a couple decades in the architectural color and design forecasting business for a global coatings company, I wanted to focus on biophilic and well-being design. While at PPG, I was fortunate enough to work on the Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater project - first, in the coatings specifications testing and then on the color palette development. In parallel, I was working on the trends forecasts and one of the drivers was biophilia for healthcare, education and more. Of course, the connection to Fallingwater and its connection to nature, before "biophilia" was coined, was fascinating to me. So, 29 years with PPG in marketing, color forecasting and paints development and a couple years on my own giving presentations on Fallingwater, working on affordable housing projects and community centres and researching daily on biophilic and well-being projects.
A Registered Landscape Architect, a LEED Accredited Professional, and an Assistant Professor at Florida State University.
